Bondi Beach
Bondi Beach is perhaps the most popular beach near Sydney. The sandy beach has become one of the city's major attractions with a good number of coastal resorts, restaurants and cafes in the area. Despite the steady rise of commercial establishments, Bondi Beach still retains its charm.
Surfing in Bondi Beach is best during the summer; it faces south and is protected from the dominating northerly sea breeze which tends to make a mess of the waves and chop the waters off. Aside from surfing, the area surrounding the beach is also a haven for skaters, cyclists and rollerbladers because of its established parkland and promenade.
If you head north, you'll come across one of Sydney's aboriginal sites as well. A golf course can also be found nearby for some tee times while exploring the rock engravings. If you choose to go south instead, you'll most likely reach Coogee, a lively coastal resort where you can take the cliff-top walk to Mackenzie's Point.
North Narrabeen Beach
North Narrabeen is popular among the local surf riders; its classic sets are to die for because of the casual run-off from Narrabeen Lake. The deep water offshore also allows the waves to produce more powerful breaks. It is also protected from northeasterly winds since it is bordered on the east by the ocean and flanked on the west by the lake. A good number of surfing competitions are done annually in North Narrabeen, one of which is the popular Coke Classic competition in April.
Palm Beach
Both as a suburb and beach, Palm Beach can be reached from Sydney by crossing the Sydney Harbour by tunnel or bridge. Head northeast to Military Road, pass through Spit Bridge then turn north to Pittwater Road. Palm Beach is the city's northernmost beach and is flanked by the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea in the east.
Shark Beach
As part of Sydney's Harbour National Park, Shark Beach is popularly known as Nielsen Park. It faces Shark Bay in the east and is known for its shark net-protected areas and shady grounds. If you're in town during the annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race, starting on December 26, Shark Beach provides the best vantage points for taking a peek or viewing the yachts. Only a few surfing enthusiasts enjoy Shark Beach because huge swells are rare.
Tamarama Beach
Tamarama Beach is also known among the locals as "Glamour-ama." Rumor has it that supermodels sunbathe in the area. However, you have to take note that the beach holds Australia's most number of rescues, making it the most dangerous patrolled beach. Yet, if you're looking for adventure, expect to see stunning 10- to 12-foot waves, making it a favorite among surf enthusiasts and photographers.
