The Battle of St. George's Caye and Independence Day

Every September 10th, Belize commemorates the Battle of Saint George's Cay. In 1798, a few Belize natives defeated Spanish forces that tried to conquer the land. Because the Spanish Army was much larger and better equipped than the natives, this battle has been recorded as one of the greatest moments in Belize history. Country-wide celebrations continue until September 21st. This day is Belize's Independence Day.

During the three weeks from September 10th to 21st, Belize celebrates with many different activities and events. These celebrations are designed to be fun and educate visitors about Belize's history, people and culture. Various carnival street parades, beauty pageants, fireworks shows, cultural shows, official government ceremonies and an expo trade show are just some of the events and activities visitors can enjoy. A visit to these events or celebrations would be a fun day trip from your Belize vacation home.

Although the festival's focus is on regional films, it also features international work by filmmakers from all over the world. Specifically, the festival features international films and documentaries about climate change. This subject matter is so important to Belize because this area of the world is very affected by this phenomenon. In addition to enjoying films and documentaries, visitors can also attend seminars and workshops hosted by many of the festival's participating filmmakers. The festival's events take place in three different cities: Belize City, San Pedro and Cayo. Ticket purchases are required.
