National Fine Arts Museum (Museu Nacional de Belas Artes)

It was founded in 1816 by French artists and moved to its present location in 1904. The art collection contains many paintings and sculpture by 19th and 20th century Brazilian artists. However, the collection is not limited to Brazilian artists. Many foreign artists are represented in the collection as well. The museum is open daily. Admission is free on Sundays. A visit to this museum would be a nice day trip from your Rio de Janeiro vacation home.
The Cultural Navy Museum
This unique museum sits atop an island off of the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Until 1913, the building was the headquarters of the Brazilian Customs Service. Then it was home to the Brazilian Navy from 1913 to 1998; it then became a museum in 1999. Since it is a museum that is dedicated to Brazil's Navy, it contains many historical and nautical documents, relics and objects. One relic found there is the remains of the Nossa Senhoro do Rosario wreck. This ship dates back to 1648 and contains china, jewelry and furniture from that period. All of the remains are on display. Guided museum tours are available.
The Aerospacial Museum
Opened in 1971, the Aerospacial Museum is a favorite with local children. The museum was opened by an Aeronautics Minister and is dedicated to preserving the legacy of Brazil's Air Force. The museums exhibits contain over 50 actual airplanes, thousands of aviation documents and many weapons and photographs. Since the museum is located on an old Air Force base, the Brazilian Air Force often gives free aerial shows. The museum is open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays, the museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is free.
The Brazil Indian Museum
The Brazil Indian Museum, which is also known as the Indigenous Museum, is dedicated to presenting the history and culture of Brazil's natives. The museum exhibits are extensive; they contain 14,000 cultural objects, 16,000 works of indigenous etymology, over 500,000 documents and 50,000 images, films, videos and audio recordings. Also at the museum is a children's gallery. There, children can use washable body paint to make themselves look like ancient warriors, hunters, chiefs and shamans. Tuesday through Friday, the museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. During the weekends, it is open from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
