Located a short ferry ride from Vancouver Island in Victoria is the Royal British Columbia Museum. The museum holds over 7 million objects and documents and 3 permanent galleries--the First Peoples Gallery, the Modern History Gallery and the Natural History Gallery. Each of these galleries teaches visitors about the area's history, modern life and wildlife through the use of authentic artifacts and specimens found in Canada. The museum is open daily. British Columbia Museum of Mining

Located on Vancouver Island is the British Columbia Museum of Mining. This museum was established in 1971 and has exhibits that focus on the history of British Columbia's mining industry. Along with having exhibitions, the museum also has many mining-relating activities for its visitors to enjoy. One of the main activities is an underground train ride to a gold panning site. The ride is 1 1/2 hours long ride through a mining tunnel and includes a stop for visitors to pan for real gold. It is open daily, children 5 and under are admitted for free.

Maritime Museum of British Columbia 

Also on Vancouver Island is the Maritime Museum of British Columbia. This museum is separated into 3 separate floors, each with a different maritime focus. The first floor is dedicated to historic navigation instruments, maps and costuming. The second floor has model ships that are replicas of 19th and 20th century Canadian war ships. The third floor is a re-creation of a late-19th century, maritime courtroom. Visitors are treated to a short video explaining the type of proceedings that would have taken place in the courtroom. The museum is open daily. 

Royal London Wax Museum

The Royal London Wax Museum is another cultural offering found on Vancouver Island. Opened in 1961, the museum houses over 300 royal, political and historic wax figures. One of the wax exhibits on display is "The Woman of the Century", which includes wax figures of Queen Elizabeth II, Diana, Princess of Wales and prominent Canadian politicians. The museum also contains the Crown Jewels Theatre. This theater has replicas of the entire collection of the Royal Crown Jewels.  It is open daily, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
