The Dominican Republic is an island-nation located in the western part of the Caribbean. People come to the Dominican Republic to enjoy activities such as windsurfing, golfing, night clubbing and shopping. As a result, the Dominican Republic is a popular vacation spot and has many vacation rentals. While you are enjoying all that your Dominican Republic vacation rental has to offer, try to also visit some of national parks in the area.
Los Haltises National Park
Located in the Samana region along the Atlantic Ocean coastline is Los Haltises National Park. The park is 83-square miles and has three cave systems. These systems have many rock formations, rain forests and swamps. With all of the ecologically beautiful areas, this park is a popular place for taking photographs and nature watching. For a fee, organized tours of the park are given; this tour includes a lunch. Non-tour admission is free.
Jaragua National Park
The Jaragua National Park is located in the Pendenales Province. This park and bird sanctuary is a little over 560 square miles of protected land. Over 130 different species of bird populations are found in this park; 10 of these species are aquatic. Also found in the park is the Oviedo Lagoon, which has the largest Pink Flamingo population found in a designated bird sanctuary. In addition to having a large bird population, the park also has a large flying mammal population. In the park's caves, there are 11 different species of bats. The park does not give any organized tours.
Armando Bermudez National Park
Opened in 1956, the Armando Bermudez National Park is the Dominican Republic's first national park. It contains the 10,128-foot Pico Duarte. This mountain peak is the largest in the Caribbean and is a part of the Cordillera Central range. Twelve different rivers flow through the park, where visitors can fish or swim. Also throughout the park are subtropical rain forests. As visitors walk through the rainforests, they may come across wild boar, hutias and solenodontes. Just as with all of these parks, a visit to Armando Bermudez National Park would make a nice day trip from your Dominican Republic vacation home.
Sierra del Bahorucco National Park
The Sierra del Bahorucco National Park is in the southwestern part of the Dominican Republic. This park is very rugged, and to visit most parts of the park, a four-wheel-drive vehicle is required. In these rugged and remote parts the park has crystallized limestone peaks, sand dunes and many areas that contain 166 different species of orchids. Because of its geologically rich terrain, this park is a scientist or botanist's dream trip. This park is also a beautiful and visually engaging experience for anyone who visits. Admission is free.
La Caleta Submarine National Park
A few miles off the coast of Santo Domingo is the La Caleta Submarine National Park. This park has two shipwrecks that act as a reef for deep-sea marine life. Both of the ships are roughly 100 feet below sea level, and visitors are allowed to dive and explore the wrecks. For visitors who wish to stay closer to sea level, they can go snorkeling among the coral reefs. The park also has a beach, which is great for sun bathing, beach combing and playing games. Admission is free, and equipment rental is available.
