Given the spectacular setting of St Croix, in the US Virgin Islands, it's no surprise that St Croix gets a fare share of visitors, and the St Croix vacation rentals are booked throughout the year. There's a lot to do on St Croix, and while most choice activities are based around the water and nature, there are tons of other local cultural events that visitors can attend to enjoy a slice of community life. Here are 5 unique festivals and events in the local events calendar. Make sure you catch some of these when staying at any of the St Croix vacation homes.
1. Mardi Croix
Every February, there's a local version of the Mardi Gras that takes over the town. The carnival is known as Mardi Croix. The entire community and visitors gather together for music, dance and a day of fun. The event begins with a parade that goes around, fuelled on music, food and drink.
2. Jump Up
Jump Up is the social event in St Croix. It's a street carnival that takes place 4 times a year. The streets are cleared of traffic, and the place is transformed into a large party venue. The shops and restaurants join in too by staying open beyond their usual closing time, and the streets are lined with vendors and stalls, each more colorful and entertaining than the other. Jump Up also enjoys a lot of live music, which adds to the festive atmosphere.
3. Taste of St Croix
You can celebrate the local cuisine at the Taste of St Croix festival. Here, at the annual week-long event, St Croix Food & Wine Experience, food, wine and chefs of the area are showcased. The highlight of the event is the cooking competition, pitting 50 of St. Croix's best chefs against each other. The event is organized to support the St Croix Foundation, and all proceeds go into island upkeep.
4. Art Thursday
Thursdays are special in St Croix; they are dedicated to art. From November to May, Christiansted, the capital of St Croix, transforms into an arts mecca. The community and the art establishment collaborate to make art more accessible to the entire city. Galleries and studios stay open for extended times, and locals and tourists have the opportunity to walk in and out, enjoying the art on display and socializing.
5. Christmas Boat Parade
Christmas is a special time in St Croix. One of the events that line up the holiday celebrations is the Christmas Boat Parade. The entire evening is organized by the St Croix Boating Community. The entire town is lit up in Christmas lights; boats in the town's marina too are decorated in Christmas lights. The Christmas parade starts at the boardwalk and the evening proceeds with street festivities including steel bands and dancers. The stores and restaurants too hold special bashes right up to the grand finale--a fireworks display over the harbor.
