Art lovers and history and culture enthusiasts are in for an interesting time in Mexico, with a stay in a Baja California resort that allows you to explore what is available in the region. Cave Paintings in the North of the Peninsula
One of the well known archaeological sites in Baja California is located in the northern part of the country. A drive to La Rumorosa community allows you to explore murals painted on rocks. The agaves capricious stone formations have preserved rock painting over time. They feature different themes, such as human existence and stars and the sun. There are abstract paintings as well.
The site is located on a 200-hectare piece of land. If you are an avid archaeologist or you want to explore as much as you can, then it is advisable to spend a whole day at the location. You can start with the El Diablito, an anthropomorphic red painting that was inspired by the religious aspect of the community.
A few kilometers' drive from the site takes you to a different location known as El Vallecito. The caves here are famous for their human like paintings, petro glyphs and mortars.

If you are in Ensenada, leave your Baja California vacation rental and drive to the southern part of the city. The location is renowned for its 10 meter high rock paintings. It features petro glyphs and other types of abstract painting. You are sure to appreciate the well preserved murals, as it is said that they are some of the best in Mexico. The site is located in San Vincente Ferre village.
50 km to the southeast of the village is yet another archeological site. This one is remarkable for it numerous geometric paintings on stone walls. You can check out the orange tones used to make the different strokes. Visit Catavina, another site located in a desert-like environment. You are sure to enjoy rock murals in a cave-like tunnel. These particular paintings are mostly geometrical.
Other Sites in Baja California
Most prehistoric drawings are silhouettes without a lot of detail. Simple outlines were used to depict geometrical patterns, turtles, birds, fish and deer. The central part of Baja also has cave paintings in Guadalupe, San Francisco, San Juan, and San Borja.
Recreational Activities in the Region
There are interesting ways you can relax after driving to any one of the archeological sites in the state. While in Ensanda, enjoy a quiet evening or walk by the beach.
