In addition to enjoying all that your Monte Carlo rental has to offer, you are probably going to enjoy all of the fun activities the city has to offer. These activities include visiting casinos, taking in the sights or sunbathing on one of Monte Carlo's many beaches. However, if you are in Monte Carlo while it is hosting a world-renown tournament or championship, you should also take the time to watch one of these spectacular events.
World Championship Backgammon
Though the championship tournament began in 1967, the championship did not come to Monte Carlo until 1976. Every July, the Fairmont Monte Carlo hosts this weeklong event, and backgammon players of all levels are welcome to enter the tournament.
This tournament is divided into various sub-tournaments: single, doubles, senior and 8-player. A separate championship tournament takes place and consists of a main competition, two consolation competitions and a "last chance" competition. Cash prizes are given to the championship and sub-tournament winners.
A base registration fee is required as well as an additional fee, depending on skill level and whether players are entering a sub-tournament or the championship tournament. A day watching one the tournament events would be a fun day trip from your Monte Carlo vacation home.
Monte Carlo Grand Masters Tennis Tournament
Dating back to 1897, the Monte Carlo Masters Tournament is another of Monte Carlo's tournaments. This tournament is distinctive because it is one of the few major tournaments that is played on a clay court and it is only for male professional players. Taking place every April or May, this is one of the Association of Tennis Professionals' nine tournaments and the only ATP tournament that is held in Monaco.
Until 2007, it was compulsory that all ATP players compete in this tournament; however, most ATP players choose to participate in this tournament. Although this tournament is not as well known as some of the others, it is very important because players' world rankings are partly determined by how they perform in this tournament.
Past winners of this tournament include Bjorn Borg, Andriy Medvedev and Rafael Nadal. Monte Carlo Grand Masters attendees have the chance to see some of the world's top tennis players. Ticket purchases are required to attend the tournament matches.
Monte Carlo EPT Grand Final
Since Monte Carlo is known for being a fun gambling and casino destination, it is no wonder that it hosts Europe's biggest poker tournament. The grand final takes place at the end of the European Poker Tour season. This season begins in August and ends the following April or May.
This is the largest poker tournament in Europe because of the large cash prize given to the grand winner and the number of players that participate in the tournament. Past tournaments have included over 800 players and the cash prize has reached $2 million. With the world's top poker players playing, poker fans are sure to have a great time watching the various games. Ticket purchases are required to attend the tournament.
