National Coach Museum (Museu Nacional dos Coches)

Located on the southern coast of Lisbon is the National Coach Museum. This museum houses many objects from the Portuguese Royal House. These objects include vehicles, cavalry accessories, musical instruments, uniforms and weapons. One exhibit is a retrospective of Portugal's last monarch, King Carlos. This exhibition includes many items that King Carlos used during his life. The museum also has temporary exhibits. One such exhibit showcases actual children's carriages that were used by members of the Portuguese court. Senior, youth and family discounts are available. National Museum of Ancient Art (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga)

Located further north on the coast of Lisbon is the National Museum of Ancient Art. This museum holds fine and decorative art from the 12th to 19th centuries; and these art pieces primarily come from Portugal, Europe and Asia. The museum's permanent exhibitions are spread amongst 70 rooms and three floors. The first floor contains the museum's European painting and decorative arts collection as well as furniture collection from the Portuguese chapel of Alberta. On the second floor, the museum houses its ceramics, jewelry and stoneware collections. The third floor is dedicated to Portuguese paintings and sculptures. The museum has a garden and restaurant on site.

Maritime Museum (Museu de Marinha)

Since Lisbon is a seaside city, it makes sense they would have the Maritime Museum. The Portuguese Navy runs the museum, which details the history of Portugal's Navy and maritime pursuits. The museum has 17,000 items, which include paintings, archeological objects and models of Portuguese naval ships.  One such item is an actual 18th century ceremonial barge that was built for Queen Maria I. The museum also has many temporary exhibits, which includes an exhibit that explores the rise of Somali Pirates in the 21st century. It is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discount tickets are available.

Chiado Museum (Museu do Chiado)

After learning so much about Portugal's history, why experience some of its current culture. A visit the Chiado Museum is a fun and exciting way to experience the vibrant culture of Lisbon and Portugal as a whole. This contemporary art museum has 5,000 pieces and focuses on Portuguese art from the mid-19th century to the present day. Mediums used in the exhibits include canvas, photography and video; and while the museum has many permanent exhibits, it regularly showcases exhibits from up-and coming Portuguese artists. It is open Tuesday through Sunday, discount tickets are available.
