Museo del Arte del Siglo XX Casa de la Asegurada
With a building dating from 1687, one of Alicante's oldest, housing one of Spain's most important modern art collections, Museo del Arte del Siglo XX Casa de la Asegurada is where the old meets the new. Also known as the Museum of Contempory Art, it stands in Plaza de Santa Maria. The museum is home to works by Picasso, Dali, Miro, Cocteau, Calder and Bacon, which were donated by Eusebio Sempere, a local painter and sculptor, in 1977. Admission is free. With advance booking, you can also enjoy a guided tour for no extra cost. The museum is open throughout the week except on Mondays.
Museo de Fogueres
Located in the historic Santa Barbara castle, Museo de Fogueres is also known as Museo de las Hogueras or the Bonfire Festivities Museum. The museum celebrates Fiesta de San Juan through effigies made out of papier-mâché, traditionally set aflame during Las Hogueras (or bonfire) festivities. Visitors will be amazed at the intricacy and craftsmanship shown through paper sculptures and satirical paper dolls on display. The museum also features a special audiovisual room that allows visitors to experience the festival through photographs and videos. Admission is free. The museum is open Tuesdays through Sundays at various times.
Museo Taurino
Situated in the Plaza de Toros de Alicante, right next to Alicante's bullring, Museo Taurino is the city's Bullfighting Museum. It exhibits anything and everything related to bullfighting, from elaborate costumes to swirling capes to razor-edged swords. There are even some unlucky bulls' stuffed heads! The museum also pays tribute to renowned local bullfighters like Luis Francisco Espla, Jose Ma Manzanares, Francisco Antón, Vicente Blau (El Tino) and Vicente Fernández (El Caracol). The museum is open Tuesdays through Saturdays at various times. Be sure you pay the museum a visit from your Alicante rental. After all, what's a trip to Spain without learning something about bullfighting?
Museo de Belenes
A little known museum located in a typical 19th century family house in the Old Quarter of the city, Museo de Belenes, the Nativity Museum, is an homage to the Spanish tradition of having a nativity scene at home during the celebration of the Three Kings. The quaint museum is home to hundreds of nativity scenes depicting Christ's birth from all around the world. Admission is free. The museum is open Mondays through Saturdays, with special opening hours during Christmas time.
