A Sunset Beach Vacation Rentals Guide, plus Four Easy Mainland Day Trips

Most Sunset Beach vacation rentals give guests maximum viewing pleasure of the grassy marsh, the wide sandy beaches and the rolling waters. Even though the beach is located at the tail-end of the series of Brunswick Islands, this charming community still has access to its neighboring towns' attractions.

1. Brunswick Town Historic Museum

From your Sunset Beach vacation home, head northeast for a glimpse of the ravages of the mid-1770s. The war did not spell the end for Brunswick Town, but something else did. To find out more about its story and appreciate how its structures have survived to this day, follow the trails in the area. There are no entrance fees collected, so you can make it a whole day affair by having a picnic lunch on the grounds and heading out to the swampy Orton Pond to admire the scenery and maybe spot alligators.

2. Boiling Springs Lake Preserve

When you go to the community center, just off Highway 87, you'll be at the trailhead of the Preserve. Trek down this trail, and you'll be amazed at the display of botanical wonders rarely found anywhere else. Even the surrounding formations like the Carolina bays all contribute to the delicate ecological balance. The many species of plants thriving in a single are makes this spectacle simply begging to be viewed.

3. Battleship North Carolina

You'll have a chance to go back to a time when this ship raged into the Pacific during World War II. Start your tour with an orientation film about the war and then spend time browsing at the exhibits. When you board the ship, you'll better appreciate the well-laid out floating mini community that includes a barber shop, a movie theater, a post office and an old church. After you're done with your self-guided tour, you can go to the canteen for refreshments or to the picnic area at the Battleship Park near the river. Located at 1 Battleship Road in Wilmington, this memorial is open every day, but opening hours may vary.

4. Shallotte Shopping

The inland city of Shallotte is tucked roughly at the mid-point between two bigger cities: Wilmington and Myrtle Beach. Among the Brunswick Islands and towns, Shallotte can be dubbed as its shopping haven due its number of stores and markets. Aside from the big box retailers, local merchants have also thrived in the area. Check out J Huffman by the beach. Ragland's Gifts and Accessories has some nice country-style items for entertaining at home. Miss Minnie's Antiques and Fancy Flea Antique Mall will fascinate you with their ever-changing inventory. Unique items can also be found at Tripps Jewelry Shop. If you need supplies for scrap booking during your Carolina vacation, go to The Scrapbook Addict.
