Another interesting outdoor competition to experience in Anchorage is the Irondog Snowmobile Race. Mark your calendar on the first Saturday of March so as not to miss out on this 2,000 mile race. It is a great way to interact with the local community and to enjoy fresh (but cold) air.

Experience the Seward Bear Jumpoff Festival

If you happen to be touring Anchorage in January, then don't miss out on the Seward Bear Jumpoff Festival. The annual event is enjoyed by the local community and adventurous folk can participate.

A three hour drive south to Resurrection Bay allows you to enjoy local cuisine such as breakfast, seafood, fish dishes, Parades, bazaar, karaoke and live performances. Watch as the locals jump into the icy water to raise funds for a good cause. The three-day event kicks off on a Friday at 12:30 pm and closes on Sunday evening.

Sports at the Aleyska Ski Resort

A 45 minute drive south of Anchorage gets you to the Aleyska Ski Resort in Girdwood. If you are up to a challenging time or you just want to have an easy time skiing, then this is a must-visit spot outside of Anchorage.

You can catch the Fur Rondy Festival in February. Once you are settled into one of the Alaska rental properties, venture out to enjoy featured activities such as skiing, basketball, children's sled dog races, the World Championship Sprint Mushing races and at night, bonfire and a torchlight parade.
