Catalina Island rentals can provide a peaceful, relaxing place to unwind. Play a round of golf, take it easy and explore the natural beauty of this California retreat. Catalina Island, a rocky island off the coast of California, is just 22 miles long and eight miles across, and is included in the Channel Islands of California archipelago. Just a bit over 20 miles from Los Angeles, this scenic island is a respite for those who seek relaxation through recreation.
One million or so tourists flock to the island each year, heading to the beaches for sun and fun. Motor vehicles are prohibited for the most part on the island, leaving many people relying on golf carts to get around. There's lots to do here, including taking glass bottom boat tours of reefs, snorkeling and diving. Golfing is also a big draw here, so book your Catalina Island vacation home and get out there to play.
Catalina Island Golf Course
Head to Avalon's Catalina Island Golf Course at 1 Country Club Drive in Avalon. This public, semi-private, nine-hole course is a challenge to even the seasoned pro. But all skill levels are welcome to play the course, which provides scenic views that will keep golfers coming back. It's a 2,100-yard, par 32 course open year round. Be sure to reserve a tee time before heading out, as it can get pretty busy. Each year, the Catalina Island Junior Golf Tournament takes place here, sponsored by the Avalon Men's Golf Club. Interestingly, Corey Pavin and Tiger Woods got their start here as kids.
Amenities
Reflective of the area's charm and history, the Catalina Island Golf Course, built in 1892 by the Banning Brothers, is the former location of the Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament. It features a pro shop, carts, rentals and PGA-certified pro on staff. Also on site is the elegant Catalina Country Club Restaurant, open daily from 11 a.m. through dinner time, and Sundays beginning at 10 a.m. for brunch. You'll pay about $30 for nine holes and $52 for 18 holes on weekdays. Weekend rates go up a bit to $35 and $57, respectively. If you're a senior or junior, you'll get a discount. The club also offers rental packages and group specials.
Spectacular Views
Part of the golfing experience is taking in the scenery, of which the Catalina Island Golf Course has plenty. Take note of the 8th tee in particular, where you'll get panoramic views of the harbor from the elevated tee. The entire course is desirable by many because of the long, narrow route that winds through the canyon on its way toward the ocean. It's not unusual to spot deer and hawks while playing, along with lots of flora and fauna lining the course. The name of the game here is relaxation, so you'll find that there may be a slow pace, which could be a good thing depending on your style.
