Every July, Crested Butte hosts the weeklong Wildflower Festival. Started in 1986, this non-profit festival celebrates the beautiful wildflowers of Colorado Valley. During this festival, over 80 instructors teach 200 classes. These classes include wildflower identification, basic botany and wildflower photography. In addition to the classes, the festival also organizes nature hikes and walks. All of the classes and events are held in the Nordic Center; and registration and class or event purchases are required. All major credit cards are accepted. Crested Butte Music Festival
Also in July is the Crested Butte Music Festival. This festival has 31 events that are divided into different categories. These categories include: bluegrass, chamber music, family music, symphonies and opera. The festival also has two educational programs, the Opera Children's Chorus and the Opera Young Artists Program. The Opera Children's Chorus provides vocal training for children 7 to 12; the chorus gives a performance during the festival. The Opera Young Artists Program teaches children about the vocal performing, dancing and acting needed in opera performances. Participants in this program give an opera performance at the festival. Individual event and festival passes are available. Children must audition to participate in the educational programs.
Crested Butte Arts Festival
In late summer, Crested Butte hosts a two-day arts festival. The festival has over 150 booths that features ceramics, fiberglass, metal, jewelry, paintings, photography, drawings. sculpture and mixed media. The festival also gives art and culinary demonstrations and has a hands-on children's art area. Attendees can enjoy live music, a food court and a beer and wine pavilion. Admission to the festival is free. Art is available for purchase in the festival's auction tent.
Fat Tire Bike Week
Since 1980, the Crested Butte Chamber of Commerce has presented the Fat Tire Bike Week. Specifically, this festival focuses on the evolution of mountain biking. The festival features different types of races, such as the Fat Tire 40 Endurance Race, the Chainless Race and the 24-Hour Bridges Race. This festival also acts as a mountain biking expo. Tire companies, bike manufacturers and bike suppliers showcase the latest in mountain biking. While at the festival, guests can watch special movie screenings and enjoy live musical acts. Admission to the festival is free; a registration fee is required for all race participants.
