An Ormond Beach vacation rental opens the door to plenty of exploring in the great natural habitats of eastern Florida. This pristine coastline, located just north of Daytona Beach, offers a very different glimpse into the Floridian lifestyle. One popular place for nature enthusiasts is Tomoka State Park due to the many opportunities for exploration and enjoying the great outdoors that it offers. We have just a smattering of the many fun activities to check out at Tomoka State Park.
Nature Trails
Tomoka State Park features a one-half mile interpretive trail that winds through oak hammocks and passes the ancient Timicuan village of Nocoroco. With help from the artificacts left behind, you can imagine what life was like for the early Timucuan tribes that inhabited the banks of the Tomoka River. During your hike, enjoy more than 150 plant species and 165 bird species that call this area home.
Camping Spots
For those who want to take a brief break from their Ormond Beach rental home, camping is another option. All of the campsites feature a picnic table, grill and water. Some also include electrical hook-ups for campers and trailers, although rigs larger than 34 feet in length and 11 feet in height are not allowed. If you are camping with children, check out the Bedtime Story Camper Lending Library for reading material for the younger campers in your party. A playground is also available to registered campers only.
Canoeing and Boating
The abundance of rivers and tributaries around Tomoka State Park make this the perfect place for exploring by boat. Sea life in the offshore area includes bottle-nosed dolphins and manatees. River otters can also be spotted in the area, as well as a plethora of birds and fish. Canoe rentals are available at the Ranger Station, and a boat ramp is located within the park.
Fishing
Tomoka State Park offers fishing in the many waters located throughout the park. The Florida Marine Research Institute has identified more than 90 species of fish in Tomoka River alone, including game fish like spotted sea trout and tarpon. If you are not a Florida resident, or you are fishing from a boat, a salt-water fishing license is required, and size and bag limits are strictly enforced.
Picnicking
If you are simply looking for a place to enjoy a meal al fresco, Tomoka State Park is the perfect spot for a day trip. There are five different picnic areas located throughout the park, all equipped with covered pavilions, grills and restrooms. After your meal, enjoy the easy hike around the interpretive trail or simply find a spot for some wildlife viewing. The park also features a museum and visitor center where you can stop in and learn more about the area.
Tomoka State Park is a lovely place to visit, whether you go for an afternoon or an overnight stay. The park is close to most Ormond vacation rentals, depending on which you choose.
