Here are some ideas for dazzling day trips from the city.
Egmont Key State Park
This park is located on Egmont Key at the entrance to Tampa Bay. It can be reached by ferry or a chartered boat. The lighthouse and the ruins of Fort Dade - a fort dating back to the Spanish-American war - are the main attractions here. You can see gopher tortoises, hummingbirds and different types of seabirds. The area has a large number of dolphins; enjoy seeing them leap out of the water or come alongside your boat. Other activities include sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and walking along nature trails. Food and water are not available on the Key and should be carried along. The park is open from 8 a.m. till sunset every day.
Fort De Soto Park
This park is located near the city of St Petersburg. It consists of a group of five Keys that are connected to each other. The Pinellas Byway connects the group to the mainland. Fort De Soto, a fort constructed in 1898 to defend the mainland, is located on the Key. A number of mortar batteries and artillery pieces used during the war are on exhibit here. Fishing is allowed on the two piers. The other attractions are a nature trail, a two mile long canoe trail, picnic areas and a playground for pets. There are two beaches: the North beach, which is one of the best beaches in the country; and the East beach, where swimming is permitted. The park is open throughout the year.
John's Pass
This is a fishing village situated between Treasure Island and Madeira Beach. John's Pass Village and Boardwalk is a nice place to relax and spend your time shopping, dining and taking part in water sports. Jet skiing, parasailing and a dolphin-watching cruise are available for the adventurous visitors.
