Surfing in Hawaii is a way of life. Drive around the island and visit any of the numerous public beaches. Chances are, in addition to white sand and warm water, you will find entire families waxing up their boards, paddling out and riding the waves. From grandma to grandkids, everyone surfs in Hawaii.

There are so many great surf breaks around the island that there's probably one within a short distance of your Maui condo. Here are a few to try.

Beginner Surf Breaks

There is no easier place to learn to surf than Maui. The water is warm, the ocean is clean and the surf is often gentle. Because of the rocky ocean floor, the waves are predictable and easy to ride.

On the popular west side of Maui, there are a great many surf schools that provide lessons and all the gear necessary: surfboard, booties and a surf shirt. They even guarantee that you will stand up by the end of your first day!

In the Kehei area, Cove Park is a very popular beginner surf spot. Located along the main highway, it is easy to find because there are almost always surfers in the water. The bottom is rocky and can be shallow so you have to be careful. The cove offers a lot of different waves to ride and the surf tends to be gentle and small. A lot of surf schools offer instruction at this beach.

North, towards the Kapalua area, there are many beautiful beaches to try. D.T. Flemings Beach Park is a popular spot that has lifeguard service, picnic tables and ample parking. The surf here is often gentle and this is a popular spot for visitors and local surfers alike.

Experienced Only

Honolua Bay is one of the top surf spots on Maui. During the winter months, when the swell hits just right, Honolua Bay produces a world-class wave. The surf at Honolua is a right break. It crashes upon a shallow reef bottom, creating a hollow, dangerous wave. Honolua is located in a beautiful part of the island where there are great beach condo rentals available. For ease of access, there is a public parking lot and a paved trail leading to the beach. Even if you don't feel comfortable paddling into this break, watching the skilled surfers ride Honolua Bay is a thrill.

Windsurfing Spots

In North Maui, along the highway to Hana, you will find Ho'okipa Beach Park. Famous as a windsurfing location, the waves here can become giant, particularly during the winter months. Ho'okipa Beach is not a place to learn, but it is a stunning ocean landscape. So even if you don't get into the water this is a great beach to be a spectator. There is parking as well as bathrooms and showers available at the beach.
