No stay at one of the finest Oahu condo rentals is complete without experiencing surfing as either a spectator or participant. Hawaii's most famous sport was born on the islands more than 3,000 years ago and has evolved from simply a way for local fishermen to bring in their catch more quickly to the global water sport it is today. So be sure to make the most of your stay at one of the island's Oahu condo rentals by enjoying some of Oahu's best surfing locations.
Seasonal Selections
When and where you surf in Oahu depends on seasonal storms in the Pacific Ocean. North Pacific storms create massive waves that hit the North and West coasts from November to March, while the surfing from May to September is better on the South Shore because of storms in the South Pacific. Wherever you decide to surf, make sure to check current weather conditions and what level of expertise is needed for each spot.
The North Shore
Surfing on the North Shore is world-famous and attracts professional surfers from many different countries. Various international competitions are held along the coast as well, so don't be surprised if you see some of the best surfers on the planet test themselves against the waves here. Be sure and visit Ehukai Beach Park and its well-known Banzai Pipeline. While the surfing here is second to none, be aware that this is also one of the most dangerous spots to surf in the world. The Pipeline has claimed several lives of amateur and even professional surfers and seriously injured countless others. Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach are two other excellent locations, but like most areas along the North Shore, these spots are best left to more experienced surfers. Beginners and average surfers should seek out the several small wave coves along the coast.
The West Shore
Makaha Beach is the premier spot for surfing on the West Shore, but while the waves are not generally as high here as along the North Shore, they can still be extremely tricky and dangerous. In fact, "Makaha" actually means "savage" or "fierce" in English, so use caution when surfing here. Still, if you are an experienced surfer this is a great place to test your skills.
The South Shore
Although not as large or dramatic as the waves along the North Shore, the ones along the southern coastline make for some excellent surfing in the summer months. Of course, this is also the most crowded area in all of Hawaii, so surfing here is definitely a group activity. Ala Moana is a favorite of locals who show off their skills inside the bowl. Diamond Head also attracts its share of surfers, and the Cliffs is the most popular of the breaks off the beach. Of course, the most famous of the surfing spots along the South Shore is Waikiki Beach. You don't want to miss coming here at least once while enjoying your stay at one of the manyOahu rentals available.
