Kill Devil Hills Rentals Listings, plus Historical & Cultural Attractions

Most visitors and residents would agree that an Outer Banks vacation rental is not a good choice if you are looking for non-stop nightlife. However, if you are simply trying to enjoy a relaxing vacation amidst some of the most unspoiled scenery on the East coast, one of the Kill Devil Hills rentals will make an excellent choice. In addition to miles of beach and sand dunes, there are several historic sights in this part of North Carolina.

What's in a Name?

The origin of the town's curious and rather macabre name supposedly comes from a brand of rum so potent that it could even kill the devil. Regardless of how it got its name, Kill Devil Hills is a pleasant seaside town that offers all the usual amenities and makes a convenient base to explore. You'll be able to find a great Outer Banks vacation rental nearby, and most have a wonderful beach location.

This part of the coast is also known for its historic lighthouses and if you only visit one, it should be the famous Cape Hatteras lighthouse. At just over 200 feet, it's the tallest brick lighthouse in the country. In addition to the spectacular views, there is also a small exhibit on lighthouses and their history. Further south, Ocracoke lighthouse at the southern tip of Ocracoke Island is one of the oldest operating in the country.

First in Flight

This part of North Carolina is famous as being the location of the Wright Brothers' historic first flight, back in 1903. The Wright Brothers Memorial is on top of one of the huge sand dunes that can be found in this area, and the complex features reproductions of their hangar and workshop, as well as full scale reproductions of two of their early gliders.

Across the Pamlico Sound on Roanoke Island is the NC Aquarium featuring fish and other sea creatures native to the state, including otters, turtles and alligators. Most visitors, especially those with children find, the 285,000 gallon shark tank to be the highlight of their visit.

Early Settlers

About 10 miles from Kill Devil Hills is Roanoke Island and the home of Fort Raleigh, one of several reminders of the early English colonists that can be found up and down the East coast. Fort Raleigh was home to just over 100 settlers and the entire site was reconstructed at the beginning of the 20th century. The highlights here are the beautiful Elizabethan Gardens, which in addition to the magnolias and gardenias feature stone statues, fountains and a sunken garden. There are also several walking trails through the surrounding woods. In nearby Manteo, you can explore the Elizabeth II, a replica of one of the early ships; the exhibit also includes a film showing just how difficult life was for those first settlers.

The Outer Banks are undoubtedly one of North Carolina's most beautiful and unspoiled areas. One of the relaxing Kill Devil Hills rentals allows you to explore the area's history and attractions - or just relax and enjoy some peace and quiet.
