Martha's Vineyard Museum

Founded in 1922 as the Dukes County Historical Society, this museum has been dedicated to preserving the history, culture and geography of the island. From its inception, the museum has collected over 30,000 artifacts relating to Martha's Vineyard. These include agricultural tools, archaeological finds, ethnographic materials, furniture, artwork, ship wreckage and vehicles. Also onsite is a 5,000-book research library and archival collection. Materials in this library date back to the 17th century and include a photo collection of the island throughout the years. Hours are: Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. During the summer, the museum is stays open until 5:00 p.m. Admission is free. Library admittance is by appointment only. A visit to this museum would be a fun day trip from your Martha's Vineyard vacation home.

Cape Cod Children's Museum

A short ferry ride away is the Cape Cod Children's Museum. The museum's exhibits fall into a few main categories: Science, For Toddlers, Role Play, Math and Problem Solving. Though the categories of the exhibit are always the same, the actual exhibits constantly change. Past Science exhibits included  a full-size, interactive and stationed submarine that included LCD screens, a video periscope, an engine station, a sonar station, plexiglass and propeller controls. The museum is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5: 00 p.m., and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the summer, the museum is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday hours remain the same. Martha's Vineyard Tours

The African American Heritage Trail of Martha's Vineyard takes visitors to different sites throughout the island. All sites included on the tour relate to the affect that African-American culture and contributions have had on the island. Half-day or day-long tours are available.

The Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary tour takes visitors on a wildlife watching expedition. Visitors can discover the various birds and critters found on Martha's Vineyard and see parts of the island only locals know. The tour ends with a visit to the sanctuary's Discovery Room. Here, visitors can see exhibits and additional animals. Senior and children discounts are available.

The Ghosts, Gossip, Downright Scandal Tour is given every Monday at 7:30 p.m. On this tour visitors can learn about the many scandalous events that have occurred on the island. Since the island is so rich in history, this tour promises to be fun and educational. The tour is free for children under 12.
