A trip to Big Sky Mountain Resort is not complete without a visit to Yellowstone National Park. There are many things to do and something that will pique anyone's interest.
Wildlife
Yellowstone is known for its
wildlife. Imagine driving around a curve and seeing hundreds of buffalo
crossing the road, or an elk taking a rest near a hot spring. There are
many types of animals and an abundance of wildlife. As you tour the
park you will see animals and you will know when you come upon cars
pulled off the side of the road that there is some animal activity. If
you travel the park in the early morning or the evening you will have a
better chance of seeing more wildlife easily as they come out to feed.
It is a good idea to check at the visitors' center for additional
information on the wildlife for the time of year you are visiting. The
National Parks Website for Yellowstone also has a wildlife safety video
to view before visiting. Wildlife viewing in the park is an experience
everyone will enjoy; follow the rules and be safe.
Geysers
Close to your home at Big Sky Mountain Resort
is one of the most well known natural wonders, Old Faithful Geyser. It
is not the only geyser in the park but it is the most famous and shoots
water 100 to 200 feet into the air. About 60 percent of the geysers in
the world are located in Yellowstone. There are many different
locations in the park that have these phenomenons but the area known as
the Upper Geyser Basin has the most, including Old Faithful. There are
five that the park staff can predict regularly. The time for the
expected eruption of Old Faithful is posted.
Hot Springs
There are many hot springs
in the park but the one that is visited most is Mammoth Hot Springs
which is located in the Mammoth District and has over 50 springs. These
wonders change daily in many ways. The mineral deposits cause a white
chalky look on the surface and the combination of hot water, mineral
deposits and more create what is called the terrace growth changing the
looks of the area constantly.
Skiing and Snowshoeing
If you are a winter sports person you will find miles and miles of snowshoe and cross country skiing trails not far from your Big Sky Mountain Resort.
Also the unplowed roads are open to skiers and for snowshoeing
opportunities. Note that conditions are different in the park compared
to most skiing locations. There are concessionaires available that
provide cross country skiing services.
Winter Tours
There are roads that are
plowed year round to allow the public into the park. From December 15
to March 15 there are also roads that are just open for the snowcoach
and snowmobile touring. There are many opportunities for visitors to
tour through these options, when the weather permits.
Enjoy a relaxing time at Big Sky Mountain Resort and take advantage of the adventures that await you at Yellowstone National Park.
