Asheville Historic Trolley Tours

These tours take guests through the historic Montford District. On the tour, guests see many of Asheville's Queen Anne-style homes, Battery Park, and the Pack Square. The tour also includes a stop at the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa. This resort has hosted six U.S. presidents and many other historic figures. Stops at various shopping, restaurant and cultural districts are also part of the tour. The tours are given by trained tour guides who relate the area's historical significance. Guests can join or leave the tour at any point. Tours run daily from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., March through December. Group, senior and children discounts are available. Basilica of St. Lawrence

Built in 1909, this Catholic church is the largest, freestanding elliptical dome in the country. Rafael Gustavino and Richard Sharpe Smith, the same architects that designed the Biltmore House, designed this church. The church is open daily to the public from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Mass is held daily at 7:30 a.m. and 12:10 p.m., Monday through Friday, Saturdays at 7:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., and Sundays at 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Biltmore House

As of 2010, the Biltmore House is the largest house in the United States. The house has an 8,000-acre back yard and contains 250 rooms. After touring the house, guests can journey out back to enjoy the estate's various gardens. These gardens include a formal Italian garden and an all-American rose garden, which features over 250 varieties of roses. While there, guests can dine at one of the estate's seven restaurants, cafes or dining rooms. Guests can also shop at one of the nine stores and gift shops on the property. Horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling and river touring activities are also offered on the grounds. Guided and self-guided tours of the estate as well as group and children discounts are also available.

The Carl Sandburg Home National Site

This National Park Service is the site of Carl Sandburg's home and serves as a celebration of his life and work. The farmhouse sits on 264 acres of land, which includes a dairy barn and five-miles of walking trails. The dairy barn is the original site of Mrs. Sandburg's goat milk business and her goat herd stables. Guests to the farm can see a demonstration of how the milk was produced and see the descendents of Mrs. Sandburg's goat herd. House tours are offered daily, every 30 minutes from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ticket purchases are required for the house tour, but admission to the rest of the grounds is free.
