Aquarium of the Pacific

Aquarium of the Pacific is situated in Sunset Beach's neighbor, Long Beach. As the largest aquarium in the world, expect to see thousands of different marine life in this aquarium. The Aquarium of the Pacific focuses on the marine life in the Pacific Ocean in major habitats and 32 exhibits. There are three major exhibits in the aquarium including the Shark Lagoon, Lorokeet Forest and a display that features changing exhibits. The BP Sea Otter Habitat features sea otters in a simulated natural habitat, including barnacle-encrusted rocks. Both kids and adults alike will enjoy the Watersheds - Pathway to the Pacific exhibit. It is an educational exhibit about the watersheds in the area. There are several more interesting exhibits in the Aquarium of the Pacific like the Baja Gallery, the Northern Pacific Gallery and the Tropical Pacific Gallery.

Ingram Planetarium

Located between Sunset Beach and Ocean Isle Beach is the Ingram Planetarium. The 85-seat planetarium has a variety of science and astronomy programs that lasts for an hour. The theater simulates the night sky where the audiences are introduced to the different astronomical bodies one can't normally see. The Ingram Planetarium also features the Paul Dennis Science Hall, which showcases several math and science interactive activities. There is also an exhibit that features the latest information about space. The scheduled program starts at 1:00 p.m. every hour until 4:00 p.m. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday. The Ingram Planetarium is situated in The Village At Sunset Beach.

Museum of Coastal Carolina

From your Sunset Beach vacation home, drive over to Ocean Isle Beach to the Museum of Coastal Carolina. This natural history museum features different exhibits about the nature of the coastal environment. The Museum of Coastal Carolina is divided into several exhibits, each focusing on the different aspects of natural science. The Ingram Lobby features Civil War artifacts like underwater archeology artifacts and rifles, as well as Carolina gold on display. The Changing Tides features displays on the tides as well as the Megabites, which is an exhibit about the shark teeth found in North Carolina. In this exhibit, there is also a wave machine that shows the high and low tide wave action.

Bird Island

Bird Island is another popular local attraction in Sunset Beach. This 1,300-acre attraction is a state preserve adjacent to Sunset Beach. Bird Island is easily accessible from the town by foot. You can walk along the shoreline of Sunset Beach going towards the border of South Carolina. This natural reserve is home to a variety of bird species and is a favorite nesting ground for Loggerhead sea turtles.
