Aquadilla
Punta Borinquen Golf and Country Club was built in 1940 and has the distinction of being played by President Eisenhower. Breezes created where the Atlantic and Caribbean meet may be refreshing, but can wreak havoc on even slightly errant shots. Open, straight fairways with more than 60 sand traps provide a challenging round especially at 17, a 190-yard par 3 requiring a tee shot over a barranca (ravine). Located at Base Ramey.
Dorado Beach Courses
Dorado Beach Resort and Club boasts four championship courses. Situated along a 2-mile stretch of secluded shoreline amid coconut groves, the East and West courses offer world class golf with spectacular views. The East course highlight is the 4th hole with a 500-yard tee to the green over two water features, making it a double dogleg that a strong player can reach in two shots. If you're not in league with Nicklaus, who ranked this one of the top ten holes worldwide, you can play around the lake in a zigzag pattern and pitch to the green on the third shot. Renowned for holes going in different directions to increase the challenge of Atlantic breezes, the West course offers four par 3s. With a distance range of 150 to 200 yards featuring several bunkers and sloped greens, these are the toughest holes you'll encounter at the complex. Of two plantation courses, Sugarcane is considered the more challenging. Birdies are possible early on, but by the 8th hole it mixes up. With shallower bunkers and larger greens, Pineapple offers a mild start leading to a tough five-hole stretch ending with an awesome par 4 at 18. Located at 100 Dorado Beach Drive.
Fajardo
El Conquistador perched atop cliffs overlooking the Caribbean and Atlantic offers a challenge even for seasoned players. With a tight fairway that rises to the right before disappearing from the first tee, you'd better bring your A game. You get a second chance at the first tee shot at 13 with an extreme uphill slope and tight fairway, requiring 200 yards to carry the crest of the hill. Elevation changes of more than 200 feet, five water hazards and 59 sand bunkers strategically placed over intimidating hills make for a formidable yet memorable round. Located at 1000 Conquistador Avenue.
Rio Grande
Berwind Country Club features tree lined, wide-open fairways with well bunkered small greens, offering water hazards on eight holes and more than 50 bunkers. It's a long challenging course to score well on from the back tees without a good driver, and strong winds are disastrous on straight drives. Touting three holes with the toughest finishes on the island, you'll have your work cut out for you. Located at Road 187 km 4.7.
