The Annual Mt. Baker Film Festival
Presented every October is the Annual Mt. Baker Film Festival. Started in 1999, the festival aims to give independent filmmakers in the ski and snowboarding industry a venue for their work. Most of the participating filmmakers are from the Pacific Northwest, but ski and snowboarding industry filmmakers from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit films. The films range from shorts to feature-length movies, and the festival takes place in one day. Food and drinks are also offered, along with the film viewings. Ticket purchases are required. A visit to this festival would be a fun day trip from your Mount Baker rental.
Baker Beacon Rally
During the second week in January, the Mt. Baker Education Center presents the Baker Beacon Rally. This one-day event offers classes in backcountry traveling. Attendees learn how to ski out of bounds, tour the backcountry, snowshoe and snowmobile in off-track areas. Three hours of classes are devoted to the basics of Beacon search racing. Students of all levels are welcome to attend. Special awards and gifts are given to class attendees, and the day ends with a Beacon Rally race. Admission into the race and the classes is free.
The Annual Legendary Banked Slalom
The following month is the Annual Legendary Banked Slalom. This three-day event celebrates snowboarding through racing competitions. The event begins with more than 50 competitors, and over the three days of racing they determine the top three male and female snowboarding professionals. Each day a series of competitions takes place, and the top qualifiers from each one move onto the next race, until the top three competitors are crowned. The event also has musical and food tents. Admission to the event is free.
The Annual Golden Egg Hunt
Every April, the Mt. Baker Ski Area Society hosts the Annual Golden Egg Hunt. Open to people of all ages, this event takes place along the mountain's slopes. The hunts are divided by age. Mt. Baker hosts four separate hunts for children, one for children 3 and under, one for 4 and 5 year olds, one for 6 and 7 year olds and another one for children 8 to 10. Anyone from age 11 on up can participate in the main egg hunt. The purpose of the hunt is to find as many eggs as possible. Each egg contains a ticket for a prize, which can be money, toys or electronic gadgets. Entrance to the egg hunt is free; each person must have a valid season pass or lift ticket.
