Whidbey Island Rental Listings, plus 3 Family-Friendly Summer Festivals

A Whidbey Island rental is an excellent accommodation choice when visiting this island off the Washington coast. This is but a short ferry ride from Seattle and many Seattleites will have a Whidbey Island vacation home for holidays and when they want to get away from the city. There are 2 main sections of the island; the northern end with the naval air station and the rest of the island. Most of the shipping is in the northern part of the island, though the south relies heavily on artists, agriculture and tourism.  It is also ranked as the fifth largest island in the contiguous Unites States. It contains a vast array of wildlife and nature, and was home to America's first national historic reserve to protect its rare plant life. During the season it is known for its exciting summer festivals that bring tourists from every corner of the globe.

Whidbey Island Music Festival

Started three years ago by violist Tekla Cunningham, the Whidbey Island Music Festival features four separate programs separated into six concerts of both classical music and baroque plaid on period made instruments. These are demonstrated on venues that line the island at: Freeland, Greenbank Farm, Greenbank, and Bayview Community Hall, Langley, St. Augustine.

The first weekend is filled with classical music performed by The Novello Quartet; the second weekend is decorated with the baroque music. The founder, Cunningham, is a member in both.

Whidbey Island Kite Festival

It is located near in the foreground of the Puget Sound and Olympic Mountains, featuring astounding feats of ground and air displays by professionals and children alike. They have sport kite training, demonstrations, and construction spread around. This will be a fun experience for the whole family, where they can relax and just fly a kite.

The area also has a large picnic area for the family to sit down and enjoy the show. They have stuffed animals dropping each day for any children under the age of ten, which makes children excited.

Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival

Started in early 1964, the Coupeville Arts and Crafts Festival have been providing family entertainment for decades now. It focuses on good quality arts and crafts, forged by artists from beyond the shores. It is located in Coupeville off of Penn Cove, Central Whidbey Island. The beautiful ocean view also hosts many vendors and booths for anyone who wants to pick up a souvenir or a piece of artwork that they particularly enjoy.

Whidbey Island Race Week

Race week offers some of the most competitive racing found in the northwest. There are activities for everyone. Families can enjoy racing, boating, swimming, volley ball, parties and golf. This normally occurs in the middle of July.

Whidbey Island Highland Games

In August, you can stop by for the Highland Games. This is just like attending a Scottish fair. There are different clans with their own tents as well as highland dances and athletic competitions. The day is full of dancing and bagpipes.
